Legislative Intern

Job Responsibilities:

The Texas Farm Bureau is a membership organization that is committed to successfully advancing the public policy interests of farmers and ranchers. The intern will work in the State Legislative Office for the Texas Farm Bureau during the 2021 Regular Session of the Texas Legislature. The candidate will gain valuable experience in the legislative process and the role of membership organizations in that process.

Major Responsibilities:

The intern will report to the State Legislative Director and assist the associate legislative directors with advocating the public policy positions of the Texas Farm Bureau. The intern will work under the supervision of the TAC chair and the TFB State Legislative Director to organize all TAC activities during the session including: 

    - Maintaining the TAC bill tracks. 
    - Scheduling speakers for the weekly TAC meetings.
    - Organizing the Taste of Texas Luncheon.
    - Monitor committee hearings on an as needed basis.
    - Implementing TAC action items.
    - Preparing all materials for weekly TAC meetings.

The intern will assist by performing research on legislation and policy issues, writing bill summaries for the staff and the weekly Austin Newsletter sent to TFB members, and occasionally attending legislative meetings as time and opportunity allows.


Job Qualifications:

The candidate must have a practical knowledge of production agriculture and rural issues. Also, a concentration or strong interest in the areas of property, environmental/water, administrative and agricultural law is highly preferred.

Other qualifications include:

-          Undergraduate or Recently Graduated from College

-          Good organizational skills.

-          Ability and willingness to learn and extend skills.

-          Good oral and written communication skills.

Occasional long, irregular work hours.

Travel as required.

Repeated use of PC, telephone, and office machines.

Extended periods of sitting and concentrating.

Occasional bending, twisting, crouching, pulling, pushing and reaching in an office environment.

Occasional lifting and moving items weighing up to 30 lbs.
