Commercial Underwriting Supervisor

Job Responsibilities:

This position is responsible for supervising the underwriting and servicing of commercial accounts according to company and departmental goals, objectives, and guidelines to obtain profitable underwriting results while meeting the needs of members and agents.  This position is also responsible for training and providing support to the underwriting staff, handling specialized underwriting projects, and handling other functions as delegated by the Commercial Underwriting Manager.

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND AUTHORITY

 

Underwrite commercial lines policies as defined by underwriting management.

 

Analyze new and existing business with regards to acceptability based on exposures, hazards, loss history and other underwriting information, and determine appropriate terms and conditions for qualifying business.

 

Make underwriting decisions in compliance with departmental procedures, guidelines, binding limitations, reinsurance restrictions, and Texas Department of Insurance regulations.

 

Request adequate underwriting information and documentation to make proper underwriting decisions.

 

Review underwriting and loss control information to assess risk quality, compliance with guidelines, and initiate appropriate underwriting or loss control actions.

 

Evaluate and monitor exposure concentrations to ensure profitable spread of risk.

 

Determine appropriate terms and conditions on substandard risks or risks with catastrophe exposures.

 

Evaluate reinsurance needs and implement appropriate action.

 

Handle large and/or complex assigned commercial accounts.

 

Effectively communicate underwriting decisions and the company’s underwriting philosophy to sales staff, insureds, and applicants. 

 

Train new or less experienced underwriting staff and assist in other commercial underwriting training efforts as needed.

 

Participate in special projects or research activities as assigned.

 

Work with other departments, reinsurers, and vendors to solve underwriting issues and implement underwriting solutions.

 

Assist in the development and training of new products, systems, and procedures.

 

Communicate with employees of other departments regarding transactions related to Underwriting.

 

Promptly report problems and provide recommendations with solutions to the Commercial Underwriting Manager.

 

Report correspondence from the Texas Department of Insurance and other regulatory agencies to the Commercial Underwriting Manager.

 

Participate in company administered training courses.

 

Manage and monitor the work of the Analysts and Underwriters within the assigned region or division.

 

Delegate responsibilities and distribute job assignments to staff within the assigned division.

 

Comply with the Certified Fleet Operator requirements of the Company Driving and Safety Policy.

 

Other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications:

Four-year degree from an accredited college or university.

 

Five years of Commercial Underwriting experience preferred.

 

Supervisory experience preferred.

 

CPCU designation preferred.

 

Strong computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office Suite.

 

Strong written and oral communication skills.

 

Strong time management and organization skills.

 

Strong problem solving abilities and critical thinking skills.

 

Ability to work independently or in a team environment.

 

Ability to train, mentor, guide, and motivate others.

 

Ability and willingness to learn and extend skills.

 

Valid Texas driver’s license and driving record at the time of hire which would not place the employee on probation, or disqualify the employee from Certified Fleet Operator Status, under the company Driving and Safety Policy.
